Quotes by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, on this year’s competition

In this year of the competition, I have been particularly struck by the exceptional creativity shown by the award-winning products. It is really impressive and praiseworthy that there are still designs out there that can surprise us with their form and functionality. This makes it clear that design cannot be restricted or brought to a standstill by unfavourable circumstances. On the contrary: more and more new ideas and creations emerge, and futuristic techniques are developed. The fact that the quality of these products equals their level of innovation makes them well-deserved winners in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2022.

Our jury was especially impressed by the products that won a Red Dot: Best of the Best. This distinction is synonymous with ground-breaking design par excellence. Only a very small percentage of competition winners were awarded this special title, because a product needs to have a certain something in order to win this top award. The fact that you have received a distinction is proof that you have created brilliant design!

The evaluation process

The Red Dot Award: Product Design dates back to the 1950s. Each year, the competition goes in search of outstanding design achievements and product innovations. The decisions on awarding distinctions are taken by an independent panel of experts, the Red Dot Jury. This year’s jury comprises 48 judges from 23 countries. What they all have in common is their design expertise, which they have accumulated during their careers as professors, consultants, designers or journalists. The jurors consider and assess each entry. The products do not compete with each other. Instead, they are assessed on a standalone basis.

In order to appropriately assess the great diversity of products and projects in the area of design, the Red Dot Design Award is divided into three disciplines – Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. With roughly 20,000 submissions, the Red Dot Award is one of the biggest design competitions in the world. 1955 marked the first year that a jury came together to evaluate the best designs of that era. In the 1990s, Red Dot’s CEO Prof. Dr. Peter Zec developed the name and brand of the award. Ever since, the prestigious distinction “Red Dot” has been a seal of outstanding design that is highly regarded internationally. The award-winners are presented in Red Dot’s yearbooks and museums as well as on the Red Dot website.
