Black Foster Micro, Red Dot Award 2022

Black Foster Micro gets the Red Dot Design Award Lighting Category in 2022. The luminaire designed by Rubén Saldaña, product director of Arkoslight, stands out as one of the best lighting designs in this event. Black Foster Micro is part of its new catalog: The New 2022 collection – Arkoslight.

About Black Foster Micro

Black Foster Micro is a feat of engineering which brings the acclaimed ‘The Invisible Black’ effect in a hyper-reduced recessed luminaire. The downlight retains high levels of shielding, takinglighting comfort to another level as regards miniaturisation. It is available in different layouts: 3 or 5 linear and in 2×2 or 3×3 grid distribution.

‘The Invisible Black’ effect makes the Black Foster Micro, whether turned on or off, maintain the same aesthetic and play a psychological trick on the spectator: you can see the light in the space but it appears that the light is turned off. As a result, Black Foster Micro stands out for its elevated visual comfort and for almost entirely hiding the light source from view.

Details on the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2022

Following the motto “In search of good design and innovation”, the 48 international members of the Red Dot Jury assessed each product entered professionally, individually and comprehensively. Only those products that won over the experts with their outstanding design quality won a distinction. The award-winning companies set new standards in the design industry with their entries. The winners include major well-known brands as well as newcomers that are more than able to compete with the big players.

The Red Dot – a mark of quality for good design

Winning is the beginning – The competition winners benefit from increased visibility of their design accomplishments. With the Red Dot, they receive a mark of quality that is now known to consumers in addition to industry experts and that is associated with good design all over the globe. The Red Dot winner label is the point of departure for the individual success story. It is perfectly suited to communications about products and quality, about innovation and corporate values – both online and offline.

Quotes by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, on this year’s competition

In this year of the competition, I have been particularly struck by the exceptional creativity shown by the award-winning products. It is really impressive and praiseworthy that there are still designs out there that can surprise us with their form and functionality. This makes it clear that design cannot be restricted or brought to a standstill by unfavourable circumstances. On the contrary: more and more new ideas and creations emerge, and futuristic techniques are developed. The fact that the quality of these products equals their level of innovation makes them well-deserved winners in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2022.

The evaluation process

The Red Dot Award: Product Design dates back to the 1950s. Each year, the competition goes in search of outstanding design achievements and product innovations. The decisions on awarding distinctions are taken by an independent panel of experts, the Red Dot Jury. This year’s jury comprises 48 judges from 23 countries. What they all have in common is their design expertise, which they have accumulated during their careers as professors, consultants, designers or journalists. The jurors consider and assess each entry. The products do not compete with each other. Instead, they are assessed on a standalone basis.

In order to appropriately assess the great diversity of products and projects in the area of design, the Red Dot Design Award is divided into three disciplines – Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. With roughly 20,000 submissions, the Red Dot Award is one of the biggest design competitions in the world. 1955 marked the first year that a jury came together to evaluate the best designs of that era. In the 1990s, Red Dot’s CEO Prof. Dr. Peter Zec developed the name and brand of the award. Ever since, the prestigious distinction “Red Dot” has been a seal of outstanding design that is highly regarded internationally. The award-winners are presented in Red Dot’s yearbooks and museums as well as on the Red Dot website.
